Sir Edward Seymour, of Berry Pomeroy

Sir Edward Seymour, of Berry Pomeroy (c. 1528 - died 2 May 1593) was High Sheriff of Devon for 1583.[1] and was knighted by his father on the battlefield of Pinkie Cleugh.

He was a son of Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, and first wife Catherine Fillol, in the senior line. The children of this marriage were placed in second preference to those of the Edward Seymour's second wife , Ann Stanhope, whose influence swayed her husband's judgement. It has been alleged that adultery between Catherine Filliol and her father-in-law Sir John Seymour ended Edward Seymour's first marriage.

He received the estate of Berry Pomeroy, including Berry Pomeroy Castle, in Devon, in June 1553. He married Margaret Walsh, daughter of John Welsh, Justice of the Common Pleas in 1563, and wife, and had one son Sir Edward Seymour, 1st Baronet.

After the line of the Dukes of Somerset in descent from Edward Seymour and Anne Stanhope failed after the seventh Duke, Algernon, the descendents of Sir Edward inherited the Dukedom.
